*NOTE: The latest version is Dreamweaver CS3. Some instructions below may vary depending on what version you are using.GETTING STARTED:
*Before you begin, take a look at Setting Up a Local Folder.
1. From main application page, select HTML under “Create New”.
2. A new blank page will launch. Make sure the Design tab is highlighted at the top.
3. Unless you’re familiar with HTML language, you’ll probably want to stay in this view while you’re working. If you are familiar with code, see the “For more experienced Dreamweaver users” handout.
CREATING A TABLE:
4. At the top of the screen, you’ll see a bar with a bunch of icons. Select the fourth icon in from the left called “Table” (it looks like a grid with six boxes).
5. When you see the prompt, decide how many rows and columns you would like. If you’re not sure, start with the default: 3 rows, and 1 column (you can always split the columns later on). Under “Header”, choose where you want your table to be positioned on the page. Click OK.
6. Put your cursor on the bottom right corner of the table and drag it to enlarge it.
7. If you decide you want to split a cell into more columns or rows, go to Modify > Table > Split Cell
8. To keep splitting cells, you can also use the shortcut: apple symbol +M.
9. Now go ahead and enter text in the cell or cells.
CHOOSING COLORS FOR YOUR PAGE:
10. Now the fun part! To format the font and/or color of your text, you can use the features available at the bottom of the Dreamweaver page. If you scroll your cursor over the color box, it will tell you if it's the box for the "text color" or "background color".
11. You can also change the background color of each cell by clicking on the “Bg” square at the bottom of the screen and choosing a color from the drop-down color box.
PREVIEWING YOUR PAGE:
12. To preview your Dreamweaver page at any time, click on the globe icon on the top bar. It will prompt you to save your page before doing this; make sure you do this or your work will be lost!
HYPERLINKING TEXT TO A WEBSITE:
13. To “hyperlink” something on your page to another site, highlight the word on your page (ex: “The New York Times”) and click on the link icon at the very top of the screen. It’s the icon directly to the right of the box that says “Common”.
14. Type in the text you want displayed on your page in the “Text” box and then the url for the link (ex: http://www.nytimes.com) in the “Link” box. Then click OK. To test that links work, preview your page in a browser.
INSERTING AN IMAGE:
15. Click on the Image icon in the top bar (see icon with picture of a tree), select “Image” and then find the image file you would like to import. As soon as you select the .jpg file (which you should have saved in your Dreamweaver folder, not the Desktop), the image should appear on your page.
16. Note that you can copy and paste this item as many times as you want. This is an option for creating an image border at the top or bottom of your page.
